Description
Thai Basil Chicken Fried Rice is a fragrant and spicy dish made with tender chicken, jasmine rice, Thai basil, and vegetables, all stir-fried in a savory sauce. It’s a quick, satisfying meal that’s full of bold Southeast Asian flavors.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups cooked jasmine rice (preferably cold, day-old)
- 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 Thai chilies or 1 red chili, finely chopped (optional for heat)
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 1/2 cup sliced bell pepper (red or green)
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp fish sauce
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- 1 egg (optional)
- 1 cup fresh Thai basil leaves
- Green onions or lime wedges, for garnish
Instructions
- Heat vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and chilies, stir-frying for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add sliced chicken and cook until browned and cooked through, about 4–5 minutes.
- Push the chicken to one side of the pan. Crack in the egg (if using) and scramble until cooked, then mix with the chicken.
- Add sliced onion and bell pepper, stir-frying for 2–3 minutes until slightly softened.
- Add the rice, breaking up any clumps. Stir well to combine everything.
- In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and brown sugar. Pour over the rice and stir-fry until evenly coated and heated through.
- Turn off the heat and stir in Thai basil leaves until just wilted.
- Serve hot, garnished with green onions or lime wedges.
Notes
- Use cold, leftover rice for best texture.
- Thai basil has a distinct flavor—sweet basil can be substituted in a pinch.
- Adjust chili quantity for desired spice level.
