Description

A hearty and comforting pasta dish featuring al dente penne tossed in a robust tomato sauce with savory browned Italian sausage and fresh basil.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound Dried Penne or Rigatoni
  • 1 pound Italian Sausage, crumbled
  • 28 ounces Crushed Tomatoes
  • 1 medium Onion, diced
  • 0.25 cups Fresh Basil Leaves, torn
  • 2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 3 Garlic Cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes

Instructions

  1. Boil a large pot of salted water and cook pasta according to package directions.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet and sauté diced onion until translucent.
  3. Add crumbled sausage to the skillet and brown thoroughly.
  4. Stir in minced garlic and red pepper flakes, cooking for 1 minute.
  5. Pour in crushed tomatoes and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes.
  6. Drain pasta (reserving a splash of water) and toss directly into the sauce.
  7. Add fresh basil and serve immediately with a drizzle of olive oil.

Notes

  • Undercook pasta by 2 minutes so it finishes in the sauce for better flavor.
  • Use a splash of pasta water to help the sauce emulsify and coat the noodles.
  • Store leftovers for up to 3 days in the fridge.
