Description
Golden pan-fried halloumi finished with a glossy hot honey, lemon, and thyme drizzle for a sweet, salty, and gently spicy appetizer or light meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 450 grams halloumi, sliced into 8 thick pieces
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 1 teaspoon red chili flakes
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest, finely grated
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Extra lemon wedges, for serving
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, plus extra for garnish
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, optional
Instructions
- Preheat a large skillet over medium to medium-high heat for 1 to 2 minutes.
- In a small bowl, stir together the honey, red chili flakes, lemon zest, lemon juice, thyme leaves, and black pepper until smooth.
- Add the olive oil to the skillet. Pat the halloumi slices dry with paper towels.
- Arrange the halloumi in a single layer in the skillet.
- Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until both sides are deep golden and lightly crisp.
- Transfer the cooked halloumi to a serving plate and spoon the hot honey mixture over the top.
- Finish with extra thyme, sesame seeds if using, and lemon wedges. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Pat the halloumi dry before cooking so it browns well.
- Do not add the honey to the pan too early, because it can burn quickly.
- Serve right away for the best crisp outside and soft center.
- Great with warm flatbread, salad, or part of a mezze spread.
