Description

Golden pan-fried halloumi finished with a glossy hot honey, lemon, and thyme drizzle for a sweet, salty, and gently spicy appetizer or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 450 grams halloumi, sliced into 8 thick pieces
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon red chili flakes
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest, finely grated
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Extra lemon wedges, for serving
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat a large skillet over medium to medium-high heat for 1 to 2 minutes.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together the honey, red chili flakes, lemon zest, lemon juice, thyme leaves, and black pepper until smooth.
  3. Add the olive oil to the skillet. Pat the halloumi slices dry with paper towels.
  4. Arrange the halloumi in a single layer in the skillet.
  5. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until both sides are deep golden and lightly crisp.
  6. Transfer the cooked halloumi to a serving plate and spoon the hot honey mixture over the top.
  7. Finish with extra thyme, sesame seeds if using, and lemon wedges. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Pat the halloumi dry before cooking so it browns well.
  • Do not add the honey to the pan too early, because it can burn quickly.
  • Serve right away for the best crisp outside and soft center.
  • Great with warm flatbread, salad, or part of a mezze spread.
