Description

Soft and flavorful Indian flatbread grilled to perfection, perfect for scooping up curries or enjoying on its own.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro, or nigella seeds for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder.
  2. Add yogurt and olive oil, mixing until crumbly.
  3. Gradually add warm water and knead into a soft, elastic dough for about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 1-2 hours.
  5. Divide the dough into 6 equal balls and roll each into an oval or round shape about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Preheat a grill pan or outdoor grill to medium-high heat.
  7. Place the rolled dough on the grill and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until puffed and charred spots appear.
  8. Optional: brush with melted butter and sprinkle with minced garlic or cilantro before serving.

Notes

  • Use plain yogurt for the best texture and flavor.
  • Grilling imparts a smoky flavor, but naan can also be cooked on a hot skillet or tandoor if available.
