Description

Easy Chocolate Flan is a rich, creamy dessert combining smooth chocolate custard with a caramelized sugar base. Served chilled and topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, it’s a decadent treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar (for caramelizing)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz / 397g)
  • 1 can whole milk (use same can as condensed milk)
  • 1 can heavy cream and water (use same can, half water and half cream)
  • 3.5 ounces semisweet chocolate, cut into chunks
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 4 eggs, at room temperature
  • Whipped cream and chocolate shavings, to serve

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Caramelize a flan pan or baking dish by melting 1 1/4 cups sugar over medium heat until golden brown. Carefully swirl to coat the bottom evenly and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan over low heat, melt semisweet chocolate with cocoa powder, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together sweetened condensed milk, whole milk, cream-water mixture, eggs, vanilla extract, and pinch of salt. Stir in melted chocolate until well combined.
  5. Pour custard mixture over the caramel in the prepared pan.
  6. Place flan pan in a larger baking dish and add hot water to create a water bath, filling halfway up the sides of the flan pan.
  7. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until custard is set but slightly jiggly in the center.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool to room temperature. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  9. To serve, run a knife around edges, invert onto a plate, and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Notes

  • Use room-temperature eggs to avoid curdling the custard.
  • Ensure caramel is evenly spread to prevent clumps.
  • Water bath helps prevent cracking and ensures smooth texture.
  • Can be made a day ahead for easier serving.
