Description

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt


Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and salt until smooth and pale yellow.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat milk over medium heat until just about to simmer. Do not let it boil.
  3. Slowly pour some of the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking constantly to temper the eggs. Then gradually add the rest of the milk.
  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly until the custard thickens, about 5–8 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  6. Strain the custard through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean bowl to ensure a smooth texture.
  7. Cover with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
