Description

Tender cabbage leaves wrapped around a savory beef and rice filling, simmered in a rich Creole-style tomato sauce with warm spices and bold flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large green cabbage
  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C and bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, cooked rice, onion, garlic, paprika, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper until evenly mixed.
  3. Heat olive oil in a pan, then add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, vegetable broth, and cayenne pepper. Let it simmer for a few minutes.
  4. Carefully peel cabbage leaves and blanch them in boiling water until soft and flexible.
  5. Place filling into each cabbage leaf and roll tightly, folding in the sides.
  6. Arrange the rolls in a baking dish and pour the sauce evenly over them.
  7. Cover and bake for 45 minutes.
  8. Uncover and bake for an additional 10 minutes to slightly thicken the sauce.
  9. Remove from oven, let rest briefly, then serve warm with extra sauce.

Notes

  • Do not overfill the cabbage rolls to keep them intact during cooking.
  • Blanching the cabbage properly makes rolling much easier.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper based on your preferred spice level.
  • Let the dish rest before serving for better texture and flavor.
