Description

A rich and comforting casserole with soft gnocchi, a hearty bolognese sauce, and plenty of melted cheese—perfect for a cozy meal any day of the week.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb potato gnocchi
  • 1 lb ground beef or pork
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Olive oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.
  2. Cook the gnocchi according to package instructions, then drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat and sauté the onion and garlic until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the ground beef or pork and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine (if using), oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10-15 minutes to let the sauce thicken and flavors combine.
  6. Add the cooked gnocchi to the skillet with the bolognese sauce, stirring gently to combine.
  7. Transfer the gnocchi mixture to the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the top with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the top is golden brown.
  9. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!

Notes

  • For a creamier dish, add 1/2 cup of heavy cream to the bolognese sauce before baking.
  • Make it ahead: You can assemble the dish up to 1 day in advance and refrigerate it before baking.
  • Top with fresh basil or parsley for a pop of color and flavor.
