Description
Champurrado is a traditional Mexican chocolate drink made with masa harina, milk, cinnamon, and dark chocolate. It is warm, thick, comforting, and perfect for cozy mornings or festive gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/3 cup masa harina
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 ounces dark chocolate, chopped
- 1/3 cup piloncillo or dark brown sugar, grated
- 1 whole cinnamon stick
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Place a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- In a bowl, whisk the masa harina with 1 cup of the water until smooth and lump-free.
- Add the remaining 1 cup water, whole milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, and cinnamon stick to the saucepan. Stir well.
- Pour the masa mixture into the saucepan and whisk until fully combined.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently. Add the chopped dark chocolate and piloncillo or dark brown sugar. Continue stirring until the chocolate melts and the drink thickens.
- Remove the cinnamon stick. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
- Pour into mugs and serve warm.
Notes
- Whisk constantly while cooking to keep the texture smooth.
- If piloncillo is unavailable, dark brown sugar works well.
- For a dairy-free version, use almond milk or oat milk instead of whole milk.
- Reheat gently on the stove and whisk before serving leftovers.
