Description

Silky-smooth and rich, this 5-Ingredient Caramel Flan is the perfect make-ahead dessert. With a glossy caramel top and creamy custard base, it’s easy to prepare yet tastes like a gourmet treat.

Ingredients

  • Granulated Sugar: 1 cup – Used to make the deep, golden caramel that tops the flan.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: 1 can (14 ounces) – Adds richness and sweetness to the custard.
  • Evaporated Milk: 1 can (12 ounces) – Lightens the texture and adds depth without making it overly sweet.
  • Large Eggs: 3 – Bind everything together while creating that luxurious custard texture.
  • Vanilla Extract: 1 teaspoon – Enhances the flavor and rounds out the sweetness.

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Set a kettle to boil for your water bath.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove any lumps.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add granulated sugar and let it melt without stirring. Once it begins to turn golden, swirl gently until fully caramelized. Immediately pour into your baking dish or ramekins, swirling to coat the bottom evenly.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Carefully pour the custard mixture over the caramel in your dish or ramekins.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Place the dish into a large roasting pan. Pour hot water around it to come halfway up the sides, creating a water bath. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 50–60 minutes, until the center is just set but still slightly jiggly.
  6. Finishing Touches: Remove from the oven and let it cool in the water bath. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Run a knife around the edge, then invert onto a plate. Let the caramel flow and serve chilled.

Notes

  • Note: Strain the custard to achieve a silky smooth texture.
  • Let the caramel cool slightly before pouring to avoid cracking your dish.
  • Chilling overnight enhances both texture and flavor.
